What is a microbattery?

The tiny devices that power your mobile life are about to get a whole lot better

Our high-tech, mobility-driven world would be impossible without batteries. Around the house, behind the wheel, at the office, and on the run, we rely on batteries of all shapes and sizes to get through each day. At Ensurge, we're commercializing battery innovations to make the next generation of portable devices better than ever.

Let's focus the discussion: the tiniest batteries are called microbatteries, and they enable giant markets. No bigger than the size of a fingernail, microbatteries* provide energy storage for micropower applications like earbuds, hearing aids, wearable sensors, medical devices, IoT sensors, and much more. Rapid growth in micropower applications, driven by increasing consumer adoption, could result in a $10 billion microbattery market in just a few years.

Coin and button cells can severely restrict wearable product design

Coin and button cells can severely restrict wearable product design

Today's most common rechargeable microbatteries are coin and button cells (thick metallic discs) and pouch cells (core battery material encased by a metallic film). Coin and button cells frustrate designers with their thick, circular shapes. Pouch cells can take several forms, but their chemistry and lack of mechanical shielding can make them prone to catastrophic safety failures including excess heat, smoke, and even fires.

Ensurge's innovative microbatteries are designed to solve these problems at a fundamental level. By using different battery materials — specifically, a solid electrolyte layer instead of the liquid electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries — Ensurge can create extraordinarily small devices that are easier to design into electronics while retaining a very high energy storage capacity and dramatically improving safety. Ensurge microbatteries can also be tailored to optimal shapes and sizes for each application, enabling smaller, more comfortable wearables and completely new categories of devices.

As UC San Diego Professor Shirley Meng, states: "Every time we invent a new type of battery, we unlock some applications people have never thought about before." At Ensurge, this means enabling new microapplications in ultrathin and ultralight devices that could monitor personal vital signs or even the surrounding environment to provide valuable real-time data to those who depend on them. Better batteries enable previously impossible applications, and Ensurge is excited to produce smaller, higher capacity, more reliable, faster charging, and safer batteries for the next generation of hearables, wearables, connected sensors, and beyond.
